Frequently Asked Questions
(Access notes can be found here!)
My child is not naturally strong or flexible, can they attend?
Yes, absolutely! As an inclusive circus school, we work hard to meet our students wherever they are at and teach them from there. We coach from a disability-centered framework, meaning we assume that each student will have their own diverse skills and needs, and our job as coaches is to support them in a way that brings out their own individual experience of success. Whether your kiddo is hanging off of everything they see, or afraid of heights and going upside down we believe that everyone can enjoy circus if they find what works for them!
Who is teaching these camps?
Our senior coaching staff are all professional coaches with many years of circus training, teaching, and performing under their belts, and our junior coaching staff are youth who have trained with our programming for many years. Coaches have strong inclusivity values and are all trained in how to offer equity-centered learning spaces that are fun, safe, and affirming for all students.
What does “inclusive circus” mean?
We believe that circus should be an accessible affirming space for anyone who wants to try it. Our particular strengths are in supporting neurodivergent students and creating an affirming space for 2SLGBTQ+ folks so all of our coaches fall into at least one of these categories. All of our senior coaching staff have a certificate from Erin Ball’s Flying Footless: Disability in Circus course, as well as Jumpsport training in the following areas: respect in sport, keeping girls in sports, coaching all abilities. Our senior coaching team also has consent-centered trauma-informed movement training, mental health first aid skills, and a community resource referral list. We also work to make our programming financially accessible by accepting sport funding, writing grants for free programming and having a resource list, and where possible offering sliding scale sports or scholarships.
My child is neurodivergent or living with a disability/ies can you support them well?
Let’s chat about it! Our goal as an organization is to make circus spaces accessible to everyone who wants to join, and we would love to chat about what accommodations we can make to include more folks in our programming. You can find our access notes for the space and programming here.
All of our senior coaching staff have a certificate from Erin Ball’s Flying Footless: Disability in Circus course, as well as Jumpsport and NCCP training in coaching all abilities. Our junior coaching staff often learn by offering 1:1 support to participants and may be able to offer that depending on the camp week.
We work to do what we can to make spaces more accessible, but we do have some limitations on accessibility for the space we operate out of (see access notes) as well as the support we can offer as a small youth-led organization with limited staff.
If you want to see if we can meet the access needs of your kiddo, or think that your child might need support or accommodations beyond our regular programming please reach out to us via email to discuss if we can offer that for the camp week you are interested in. The earlier the better for our planning rainbowcirque@gmail.com.
What experience is required for the performance camp?
Students wishing to attend the performance camp should have at least a year of experience in circus training and should have performed in a minimum of two shows with Rainbow Circus. This is an intensive creation period with a show at the end, participants must be committed to attending all five days of camp and participating in the camp end show.
If you’re not sure if this camp is right for you, ask your coach! Students wishing to join from other studios should email rainbowcirque@gmail.com to see if they meet the requirements.
Do campers need circus or gymnastics experience?
All of our camps other than our performance camps are beginner friendly! We keep our camp groups small so that we can teach to the needs of each individual. If your child has no previous experience and no natural disposition in these areas we are excited to help them find ways to feel successful and celebrated in their circus classes. Likewise, if your kiddo is coming from a circus or other sport ground. Our teachers are trained to accommodate a variety of skill levels in every class.
Note: those wishing to join our performance camp week must have previous experience (see requirements).

Do you offer any funding resources?
Yes! We accept Jumpstart sports funding as well as offering Rainbow Circus Community scholarships. You can find info on this on our resources page. In addition to this, we have a sliding-scale sport built into into of our camps once we reach a minimum number of participants to make it financially sustainable (email us rainbowcirque@gmail.com).
Do you have a waitlist?
Yes! In the event that our camps are full you are welcome to email us to be added to the waitlist at no cost. If spots open up, we will offer them in the order waitlist applications were received.
What are your lunch policies for food allergens –like nuts?
We know that caregivers have a lot on their minds while packing lunches and work to make it easier on you in the summer months. If one of our campers has a serious allergy we may ask caregivers to refrain from packing that ingredient for the week, and pack only “school safe” lunches. Otherwise, you are welcome to pack whatever food that your child is most likely to eat.
Most of our lunch and snack times take place outside in well-ventilated spaces, and students consuming high-allergy items (ex nuts) are asked to wash their hands after eating.
Please note that our facilities connect to and share bathroom facilities with a French bakery that uses eggs, milk, nuts, gluten, and other ingredients in their cooking. Students with anaphylactic allergies should bring an epi-pen just to be cautious.
What is your illness policy?
We believe in taking a community-centered approach to illness to protect our most vulnerable community members and their families. We’ve also learned (from experience) that it is best to not flip, tumble, and climb when you are feeling unwell.
Please stay home if feeling sick, and mask up if you have lingering symptoms, we have masks in the studio for participants who come in with lingering coughs and stuffy noses–help yourself!
Participants who are ill with colds, stomach bugs, fever, covid, lice, ect. are not permitted to attend programming. There will be no refunds for programming missed for illness.
What is the cancellation policy?
A non-refundable $50 deposit is required to secure your child’s spot in camp. If you need to switch weeks after registering we may be able to accommodate that. Cancellations more than a week (7 days) before camp starts will receive a full refund less the non-refundable $50. Cancellations less than a week before camp will incur a late cancelation fee of $100 and will be refunded tuition less 100$. Cancellations cannot be made once the camp week starts, and refunds will not be given for campers who are sick.

Kid’s Circus Camp (9am-4pm)
Our circus camps are fun-filled days for all levels of circus kids and youth over 7 years of age. Circus campers will be supported and encouraged as they try a variety of circus disciplines. Throughout the week circus campers will have the opportunity to learn aerial silks, aerial hoop, partner acro, tumbling basics, juggling, and hula hooping. Our camp day also has (weather permitting) outside time built in at Greenwood park which has a splash pad for hot days, as well as quiet craft or boardgame time after lunch.
We work to foster an inclusive and affirming environment that celebrates each unique individual, whether our campers are spotlight stars, or on the shyer side, we find that circusing together creates great opportunities for forming friendships and having fun! Throughout the week our campers will have the opportunity to learn mini routines for a community showcase on the last day of camps. We offer face painting for our performers and a free circus show for any of their friends and family at 3:30pm on their last camp day.

Performance Camp (9am-4pm)
The performance camp is a chance for our more advanced students to spend a week experimenting and innovating to create a circus show for presentation on the Friday at the end of camp. Under the instruction of professional circus performers, campers will have the opportunity to learn new apparatuses and explore partner aerial and ground work as well as dramatic storytelling. The schedule for this camp is a bit different from our regular schedule with more intensive performance training but follows the same general pattern.
Students wishing to attend the performance camp should have at least a year of experience in circus training and should have performed in a minimum of two shows with Rainbow Circus. This is an intensive creation period with a show at the end, participants must be committed to attending all five days of camp and participating in the camp end show. The show for this camp will be a ticketed event shared with the local community, with proceeds going towards our Rainbow Circus scholarship fund.

Rainbow Teen Camp 9:30am-4:00pm
Rainbow Circus camps are for 2SLGBTQ+ youth and allies ages 12-16 focusing on empowerment, self-expression, and artistic creation. Throughout this one-week immersive circus experience, participants will learn both aerial and ground circus from a variety of Queer and Trans artists. Our specific goal is to support folks who may not feel as welcomed in traditional movement spaces. This includes queer, trans, and gender-nonconforming people, those experiencing mental illness, neurodivergent people, racialized folks, people with disabilities, and youth of all body sizes. Each camp week will end in a themed circus show open to the public which participants have the option to perform in.
In the past three years, we have been grateful to receive grants and support from ArtReach and the Toronto Arts Council that have allowed us to offer these camps for free. This year we are offering the camps on a sliding scale model to balance financial accessibility with business sustainability.
